The RA Minister of Agriculture Discussed the Process of the Effective Forest Management Program with the World Bank

The RA Minister of Agriculture Sergo Karapetyan met with the World Bank delegation, comprising Senior Environmental Economist, FLEG Program Manager Gayane Minasyan, Senior Forestry Specialist Tuukka Castrén, Environmental Specialist Vladislava Nemova, FLEG Program Coordinator Arusyak Alaverdyan.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the EU-funded ‘European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI) East countries: Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) 2 program and outline future cooperation plans.
“In recent years in our country enough work has been done towards the effective management and conservation of forests, illegal forest felling has decreased, but the industry still faces a number of problems for the solution of which we expect support from international organizations, including the World Bank,” Sergo Karapetyan said welcoming the guests.
In particular, the Minister said that apart from the industry legislative changes, there is a need for technical support, advanced equipment investment that will allow to carry out monitoring of forest areas, thus contributing to more effective forest management and restoration. The Minister said that the government is taking all possible measures to extend the forest areas.
During the meeting the sides discussed the process of the ENPI FLEG 2 program, which aims to support the effective management of forests, forest policy, legislation and institutional structures through efficiency improvements.
The delegation members stressed the World Bank’s commitment to continue cooperation in the forestry sector and stressed that after the implementation of the program the World Bank intends to continue to assist Armenia in this issue.
